Asymptotic Geodesic Gridshell: Design Phase

Type: Elastic Timber Gridshell

This research project combines new methods from applied geometry, computational architecture, and structural design. We design webs of asymptotic and geodesic curves to weave simple planks of wood in their tall and flat orientation into a lightweight timber structure. This offers high structural rigidity, developable panelization, simple flat prefabrication, and a kinetic erection process. A prototypical structure will be realized in fall 2022 at the Design Factory, TUM.

First Design study of the Asymptotic-Geodesic Timber Gridshell, combining a slender column with a hanging roof structure.
