Kinetic Umbrella: Design Phase

Type: Transformable Structure

Location
: Munich, Germany
Year: 2020
Status: Design
Planning Team: Eike Schling,  Jonas Schikore
Office: The University of Hong Kong in collaboration with the Technical University of Munich

The Kinetic Umbrella  is an ongoing research project to be exhibited at the AAG in Paris. It utilizes the predictable deformation behaviour of lamella-grids to create a transformable structure. The grid was designed using Finite Element Analysis, tracking the deformation behaviour under various support conditions. The lamellas will be constructed from continous, rectangular,
hollow GRP sections of approx. 100x20x3 mm. All joints are hinged in order to accommodate a compliant mechanism. The spring effect will automatically close the umbrella upon releasing the vertical cables. A series of tailored ring cables define the unfolded geometry and secure the cantilever.
